Marking the start of the Aurèlia Muñoz Centenary, MACBA's atrium displays three reconstructions from her Ocells-estels (1982) series. Muñoz designed these sculptures for high installation, engaging with natural light—conditions faithfully reproduced in this presentation. In 1982, the series traveled to Madrid's Palacio de Cristal and Barcelona's Drassanes Reials, two venues noted for their scale and luminous qualities. It was later selected for the 11th International Tapestry Biennial in Lausanne (1983).
Muñoz, born in Barcelona in 1926, is a pivotal figure in understanding contemporary art. Her work, primarily sculptural yet also pictorial and graphic, revitalized ancestral techniques such as embroidery, macramé, and paper-making. She engaged with the avant-garde of her era, forging connections between art, architecture, theatre, and engineering. Her pieces anticipated eco-social concerns, from material sustainability to inter-species relationships. The installation also establishes a symbolic dialogue with Antoni Gaudí, coinciding with the centenary of his passing.
