Arc de Triomf
Gateway to modern Barcelona.
The Arc de Triomf, designed by Josep Vilaseca i Casanovas and erected in 1888, marked the main entrance to Barcelona's Universal Exhibition. Located on Passeig de Lluís Companys, this red-brick monument showcases a unique Neo-Mudéjar style. Its purpose wasn't military but civic, celebrating the city's artistic, scientific, and economic progress and its role as a global host. The sculptural friezes depict the welcome to nations and the reward for participants, featuring allegories of industry, commerce, and the arts. A key element in shaping modern Barcelona at the end of the 19th century.
