Parròquia de la Mare de Déu de la Mercè i Sant Miquel Arcàngel - Basílica
Baroque Gòtic: Patroness and medieval memory.
In Plaça de la Mercè, the Basílica de la Mercè stands as a Baroque landmark in the Gòtic. Built between 1765 and 1775 by Josep Mas i Dordal on medieval foundations, its Counter-Reformation architecture defines the district. The Rococo-ornamented interior houses the 14th-century Gothic carving of Mare de Déu de la Mercè. An 1888 dome and a 15th-century Flamboyant Gothic façade, relocated from Sant Miquel, attest to its evolving history. The main sanctuary for Barcelona's patroness, its legacy ties into the Mercedarian Order, founded in 1218. A site revealing Ciutat Vella's rich history and culture.
