Còdols 16: Where textiles forged the Gòtic
At the heart of Barcelona's Barri Gòtic, at Còdols 16, stands the Casa-fábrica Güell-Ramis, a preserved testament to the city's early industrialization. This site was a pioneering textile factory, notable for its advanced technology since 1784, operating one of the country's first cotton spinning mills with a 'spinning jenny' machine. In 1854, the Güell, Ramis y Cía company, led by influential industrialist Joan Güell, acquired the property. Though the factory section was demolished, the residential part, rebuilt between 1858 and 1861 in a neoclassical style by Josep Oriol Mestres i Esplugas, still outlines a crucial chapter in Ciutat Vella's economic and urban history. This building embodies the Gòtic's transition from an artisan hub to an emerging industrial center.
