Rationalist footprint: GATCPAC's children's library
In Plaça de les Palmeres, Sant Andreu, the Former GATCPAC Children's Library was a landmark of Catalan rationalism. A GATCPAC project designed by Joan Baptista Subirana, this demountable structure opened in 1934, embodying the spirit of the Second Republic. Inspired by Le Corbusier's functionalism, it provided crucial access to reading and education for working-class children, reflecting the Pla Macià. After a decade of cultural and social service, it was dismantled by Francoist authorities between 1944 and 1945. Its absence today highlights the memory of a truncated urban and pedagogical project in Barcelona.
