John Cage and Frederic Amat engage in dialogue at the Gran Teatre del Liceu. The work "Ryoan-ji" offers a meditation on sound, silence, and matter.
Cage conceived "Ryoan-ji" inspired by Kyoto's rock garden, a place where time dissolves. His music breathes, it does not advance. A constellation of scattered sounds, almost mineral, evoking an ancient world revealed only to those who know how to listen.
This piece gains an unusual visual dimension through Frederic Amat's intervention. Far from illustrating the Zen landscape, his proposal becomes an organic extension of the sound. Textures evoking sediments, pigments emerging from a submerged garden, lines sharing the music's restraint. Amat does not simply dress the stage; he transforms it into a ritual presence.
In "Ryoan-ji," instruments draw circles and irregular trajectories, a sonic calligraphy that Amat mirrors with matter and light. The stage becomes a contemplative microcosm: eye and ear learn to shed excess, seeking purity. Cage proposes a new way of listening; Amat, a new way of seeing. The result: a bridge between East and West, the visible and the suspended, the minuscule gesture and the infinite idea. A garden without stones, a meditation in motion, a sonic and visual landscape.
