Basílica de Santa Maria del Mar
Catalan Gothic: the essence forged by La Ribera.
In the heart of El Born, the Basílica de Santa Maria del Mar stands as a paradigm of Catalan Gothic. Built between 1329 and 1383, its construction was a collective project, funded and executed by the guilds and residents of La Ribera, including the 'bastaixos' who hauled its stones. Its architecture features almost uniformly high naves and slender octagonal pillars, creating a unique spaciousness and lightness. This monument embodies the spirit and pulse of a maritime Barcelona, a counterpoint to the grandeur of other ecclesiastical buildings.
