Antic Monòlit Dedicat a la Legión Condor

Vestige of conflict. Plaça Reina Maria Cristina.

The venue

At the intersection of Diagonal and Gran Via de Carles III, where Plaça Reina Maria Cristina now forms a vibrant urban axis, a commemorative monolith once stood. Inaugurated in 1941, this monument was funded by the Nazi government, honoring Condor Legion aviators who fell in 1939 – a force involved in indiscriminate bombings like Guernica. A symbol of the controversial link between Francoism and the Third Reich, its presence sparked debate and attacks. The monolith was finally demolished in 1980. This spot in Pedralbes, now a key artery, preserves the memory of a past the city chose to dismantle.
