Chamfered Modernism: Josefa Villanueva's asymmetry
- la Dreta de l'EixampleC Roger de Llúria 80
The venue
At the intersection of Roger de Llúria and València, the Cases Josefa Villanueva stand as a monument to Catalan Modernism in the Dreta de l'Eixample. Designed by Juli Maria Fossas i Martínez and built 1904-1909, these residences originally formed a symmetrical pair. They showcased two open stone bay windows, crowned with domes, defining the chamfered corner. Today, one structure is lost to renovation, leaving an asymmetry that speaks to its past. Listed as a Local Cultural Asset, its stucco and Montjuïc stone facade retains the essence of Barcelona's architectural heyday.
