The venue
In Plaça de la República, Nou Barris, stands the 'Homage to Pi i Margall', a monument to the First Spanish Republic and its president. The centerpiece is 'La Flama' (The Flame), a 1934 bronze sculpture by Josep Viladomat, a female allegory of liberty with a Phrygian cap and laurel. A medallion by Joan Pié featuring Pi i Margall's effigy accompanies it. Its current corten steel structure, designed by Albert Viaplana and Helio Piñón, was inaugurated in 1990. The original work, from 1936 in Cinc d'Oros, was dismantled by Franco's regime and hidden, only to be reinstated decades later as a key reference for the district's historical memory.
