Estació Barcelona-Sants de RENFE
Barcelona-Sants: Functional geometry, urban epicenter.
- SantsPl Països Catalans 1
The venue
Inaugurated in 1975, Estació Barcelona-Sants stands as the city's railway connectivity hub. Built atop a slab covering old infrastructure, its functional design—steel and concrete—mirrors the era's architecture. Adjacent, Plaça dels Països Catalans, by Viaplana and Piñón (1981-83), extends this brutalist aesthetic, originally conceived without green elements. Beyond its primary role as a high-speed, mid-distance, and Rodalies commuter train nexus, Sants drives Barcelona's ground pulse—a constant flow of arrivals and departures shaping the identity of Sants-Montjuïc. Its presence is an urban statement, a city threshold.
