Les Corts: Psychiatric awakening's enduring mark

  • la Maternitat i Sant RamonC Mejía Lequerica 55

The venue

In Les Corts, L'Antic Institut Frenopàtic stood as a pillar of Barcelona's psychiatry. Founded in 1863 by Tomàs Dolsa and Pau Llorach, it pioneered natural therapies in Spain, breaking from confinement. Its neoclassical and eclectic architecture, designed by August Font Carreras (1872-1883), housed this vision. Closed in 2000, part of its façade on Mejía Lequerica still displays original signs for "gentlemen's department" and "ladies' department." Today, its gardens and the "El Pinar" mansion are integrated into Hospital Dexeus, a powerful 19th-century legacy.
