At Carrer de la Llacuna 31, the site known as L'Hort del Cànem evokes Poblenou's agrarian roots, where hemp was cultivated as early as the 18th century. This land witnessed a profound transformation with the dawn of industrialization. Here, the 'El Cànem' jute spinning factory was erected, a manufacturing hub that employed thousands under demanding conditions. The brick structures still standing in the area, some integrated into the Knem building, recount decades of production, its later reconversion into a provisional prison during the post-war period, and its role as home to La Vanguardia's printing press. L'Hort del Cànem condenses the historical memory of a neighborhood forged between land, industry, and constant urban reinvention.
