The venue
The Obelisc del Cinc d'Oros stands at the confluence of Diagonal and Passeig de Gràcia, a pivotal spot in the Dreta de l'Eixample. Its popular name recalls Pere Falqués' original layout of roundabouts and streetlights, referencing the five of gold card. Erected in 1936, this granite monolith, with its sober, late Noucentista aesthetic, was initially a tribute to the Republic and Pi i Margall. However, its history mirrors the country's political upheavals, with the republican figure replaced by an imperial eagle and an allegory of Victory under the dictatorship. Today, stripped of all explicit symbolism, the obelisk endures as a silent witness to urban evolution and shifting regimes.
