The venue
The Pont de Calatrava, conceived by Santiago Calatrava between 1984 and 1987, stands as an emblem of pre-Olympic Barcelona. Its design—twin white steel arches and tension cables—bridged railway tracks, linking Sant Andreu and Sant Martí and dissolving a historic urban divide. More than just an essential road connection, it became a landmark of new architecture, redefining the periphery and forging a new urban axis. The 1987 FAD award confirmed its aesthetic and functional impact on the city's fabric.
