Valls is the town where the calçotada was born, and the birthplace of castells, Catalonia's human towers. Plaça del Blat is regarded as kilometre zero of the casteller world: the two groups that founded the tradition perform here, and the Museu Casteller de Catalunya and the Sant Joan bell tower are a short walk away. From November the town revolves around the calçot: Calçofest opens the season and the Gran Festa de la Calçotada celebrates it on the last Sunday of January.
