The Comissió de Festes de la Barceloneta and more than fifty associations, community centres and groups fill the streets with popular culture, music, open-air meals and activities for all ages. The Canó, the star of the show

The Canó (the cannon) is the symbol of the festival and it turns up everywhere. The opening speech hands out the silver Canó, on Tuesday 29 the Canó and General Lagarto visit the local schools, and on Saturday 3 from 10am to 1pm the Cercavila del Canó parade sets off from Plaça de la Barceloneta to the chant of «Senyor Rector, volem el canó!». It's a family parade and one of the events children look forward to most.

Fire: Correfoc del Canó and Foc Bestial

Friday 2 starts with the Tabalada del Canó drum parade (7:15-7:45pm) along c. Pizarro, c. Baluard, c. Maquinista, pl. Pompeu Gener, pg. Salvat Papasseit and c. de la Conreria. At 8pm the Correfoc del Canó fire run sets off from the passeig Marítim (corner of Andrea Dòria) along c. Pepe Rubianes and pg. Joan de Borbó to Plaça de la Barceloneta. It is organised by the Diables i diablesses de la Barceloneta, with the Colla de diables de Sant Antoni and the Diables de la Colònia Güell.

On Saturday 3 at 7pm comes Foc Bestial. Versots infernals, by the Geganters de la Barceloneta: a torchlit parade from c. de la Conreria, a fire run along c. Pepe Rubianes and pg. Joan de Borbó, and a reading of satirical verses and a final burning in Plaça de la Barceloneta.

The programme repeats the usual safety advice for fire events: cotton clothes that cover as much of your body as possible and closed shoes, protect your eyes and ears, don't throw water at the participants or block their way, don't put children in the front row, and wait for the parade in wide streets, away from crowd bottlenecks. If your clothes catch fire, drop to the ground and roll: never run.

Galejada, sardanes and takatà

Saturday 3 wakes up at 9am with the Galejada trabucaire of the trabucaires d'en Perot Rocaguinarda, a blunderbuss salute that goes round Plaça de la Barceloneta, pg. Joan de Borbó, c. Pepe Rubianes, the passeig Marítim, c. Andrea Dòria, pl. Poeta Boscà and c. Escuder. The organisers recommend ear protection. The same day there is sardana dancing at 12pm in Plaça del Poeta Boscà and, from 11am to 2pm, takatà on Somorrostro beach: Barceloneta's traditional sport.

The bomba, the paellas and the streets in party mode

The 6th edition of La Barceloneta és la bomba, ACIB's food route, invites you to try the bombas of several local restaurants on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 from 12pm to 10pm (trying them all wins a prize; the route is on acib.cat). The streets throw their own party: carrer Baluard, carrer del Mar and carrer dels Pescadors have something on almost every day, with vermouths, a sardine feast, botifarradas, paellas and fideuà.

Posidònia Green Festival and La Sardineta

The Posidònia Green Festival brings together art, science and the sea in Plaça Hilari Salvadó on Friday 2 and Saturday 3, with a beach clean-up, talks on marine biodiversity and concerts. On c. Atlàntida at the passeig Marítim, La Sardineta puts on two long nights: Alma de Boquerón and DJ La Niña Mai on Friday, and Chameleons, La Candombera, Gnawa Vibrations and DJ Soumeya on Saturday.
